Local NDP candidate Karen Gventer is throwing her hat in the ring ahead of the June 7th provincial election.

Gventer also ran provincially last time in the riding of Bruce Grey Owen Sound and twice federally.

The NDP nomination meeting is set for January 20th at the Owen Sound library.

The provincial election is June 7th.

The following release announced Gventer’s bid:

Karen Gventer is bringing the message, “Enough is enough” to Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. She is concerned that farmers, students, youth, seniors, women, working people, indigenous people, and small business owners can no longer afford Liberal and Conservative governments. Gventer seeks to make life affordable for everyone, not just a chosen few.

Gventer has provided action and helped build the community where we live. Security, safety, health and the enjoyment of life in Grey Bruce Owen Sound have been her priorities in her working and volunteer life. She works in health care, is involved in her union, and has volunteered as a youth soccer coach and with Fiddlefern Country Dancers. Gventer and her family enjoy hiking and fishing in the abundant natural areas found in Grey and Bruce.

Gventer understands the important daily problems people face. The invention of artificially high cost of Hydro, which Gventer says were brought about by both Conservatives and Liberals, must be stopped, and the costs must be lowered.

“People in Ontario are concerned about the rising hydro rates, and concerned about the Liberal’s shell game that doesn’t really benefit us hydro users at all,” says candidate for New Democrat nomination Karen Gventer.

“The Conservatives want to carry through with that disastrous plan they began in 1999. Only the New Democrats have a plan to put Hydro One back in public hands, where the costs can be kept down for hydro users and voters have a direct say.”

Gventer also is excited about the New Democrats’ plans for Pharmacare. “I have a friend who had to make choices about buying food or paying for her needed medication. No-one should have to choose to get sick by not eating properly or get sick by not having their prescription medication. It doesn’t have to be that way. With Pharmacare, which is prescription drug coverage for everyone, people can fill their prescriptions without worry. Also, it would save the health care system money – if people are able to fill their prescriptions, they will get better instead of sicker. People matter most. If this is done in other countries, New Democrats can certainly do it here”

Grey Bruce is an agricultural area, and the New Democrats have plans to strengthen rural communities. Gventer believes that the New Democrats’ plan for an Ontario Food Strategy will help build family farms and agricultural areas. “Together, with the farming community, we can build a better Ontario for all of us.”

The Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound NDP Electoral District Association nomination meeting is scheduled for January 20, 2017 at 1:30 pm, at the Owen Sound Library. All are welcome to attend; members must be signed up 30 days prior to the meeting to vote.
