City dissolves Tom Thomson board
The Owen Sound Tom Thomson Art Gallery has dug itself into quite a hole.
As we’ve been reporting for the past couple of months, the gallery has been dealing with a deficit this year but no one could say exactly how much – only that it was more than last year’s $85,000 shortfall.
Council learned Monday night that it sits at a whopping $500,000.
As a result, the gallery’s board has been disbanded by the city.
In its place, an advisory committee made up of residents and three council members who will be reporting directly to city hall staff.
This is on top of oversight already put in place after two years in the red.
As we reported a couple of weeks ago, the city will be drawing up the gallery’s budget for next year with regular reports to council.
They’ve also already said they’d cover the deficit by reducing the gallery’s annual funding over the next ten years.
